Question: Medical Transcription?

I have recently started school for Medical Transcription at Penn Foster. I thought I did a good bit of research before i decided on becoming a MT. However looking through newer blogs and such I am noticing that the job market is much more difficult than i thought. Most companies require 2-7 yrs of experience. Obviously i’ll be a new graduate in a few months and am having doubts about finding work in the MT field.

Is having my Medical Transcription Certification from Penn Foster not enough to find work without 2-7 yrs MT experience?

Was Penn Foster not a good choice for my MT certification?

Does anyone have any advice for a soon to be graduate in Medical Transcription?

Answer: Since you’ve gone to all the time, money and trouble of finishing this course I’ll leave any editorials to myself regarding this field and just answer your questions.

There are still some companies who hire newbies, and I believe Penn Foster has a placement program so by all means use them as much as you can, as well as doing your own research for findings places that hire new graduates. Even without experience most places DO want you to have some schooling. It’s a very difficult job, more than people realize.

Penn Foster is one of the more reputable schools so there’s no problem there.

My advice: omgosh where do I begin?

1. When you job hunt, play up your skills. If you can type 85 wpm practice even more than you’re doing now and get it up to 100 at least. I, as well as many in my field can type around 115 wpm, so this is what you’re up against. Don’t worry if you’re speed isn’t up there, it will be.

2. Get GLOWING recommendations from your teachers.

3. My recommendation for all newbies is to get work in a hospital/clinic just wherever you can find work in a physical location, Not At-Home Work – not yet. I learned So Much from working at the doctor’s office AND a hospital before working from home and the experience I got was invaluable, I would have been SO lost if I had tried to work from home on the ground running. But it’s very difficult anymore to find a hospital that doesn’t outsource their work, so good luck. Try ALL medical professions, doctors, midwives, chiropractors, dentists, etc.

4. Finally, if you do decide to work from home I know Medquist hires newbies. But they’re pretty inconsistent and due to their new workpool situation have made working for them rather difficult but it would be a good place to start and at least get your feet wet. It’s all about experience at this point.

5. Do what’s best for you. Because of the state the MT world is in right now, I wouldn’t make this be your sole source of money, so don’t quit your day job and you’ll be all right. Good luck.
