Question: What’s the best way to beat internet addiction?

It’s the new year and resolution time again, and more specifically, it’s break-your-resolution time again as well. And I already have.

I know this is a difficult question, and everyone’s different blah blah blah. And I see the irony in asking how to beat internet addiction in an online forum. I just wanted any tips from people who have learnt to control the amount of time they spend on the net.

A little background and context. I’m naturally a tech geek. I’m also addicted to information and read many blogs regularly, constantly surf wikipedia, BBC news. I have god knows how many RSS feeds in my feed reader. And of course I waste even more time on Y!Answers and Y!360.

However, I can’t just switch off my computer, or remove my broadband connection. I’m a PhD student and I need the connection and access to actually do my work (and I do have to do a lot of work at home).

Ideas?

Answer: Since you love the Net so much, I’m guessing you have multiple tabs open at once. Try to keep the number under 3 tabs. When you have work to do, don’t do anything other than that until you have accomplished a substantial amount – no E-mail or Y! until you do some work. And if you find yourself migrating to Y! or BBC just take a deep breath and close your window.

Question: Stay at home job for a registered nurse?

I have a eight month old daughter and recently relocated to Atlanta, I have been home with her for the past three months and I longer want to go back to work. I am a registered nurse who has worked in a special care nursery for the last ten years. I am looking for a stay at home job where I can use my nursing degree.

Answer: Check with attorneys or insurance companies in your area. My sister-in-law just adopted a baby, she had to quit her job. As an RN, she didn't think she could really do anything for a while. However, an attorney in the adoption proceedings asked her audit documents that have medical terminology as he has no clue if they are right, wrong, etc. She of course is thrilled...she can do it in her spare time and it is a solution.

Question: Best way to work from home?

I’m a full time stay at home dad while my fiance works long hours for a tax/accounting office. I’m looking for a way to make some extra money working from home. Does anyone out there know of any LEGITIMATE ways to do this? Please only answer if you are a person with some experience doing this. DO NOT answer with some ridiculous internet scheme. I’ve seen them all. By the way, I WON’T be posting ads or links on Google…that seems to be a pretty popular load of crap.

Answer: Take a home study course in Medical Transcription. Upon completion you will be Certified and can contract out your services to a larger firm to gain experience. You will be paid on an hourly rate commusurate with your ability to perfom. Its based on accuray, dependability and of course, the fact that you are Certified. In the beginning you will not make as much as later. You will not make the rate of someone who owns and operates their own Medical Transction busness as they assume all the responsibility. They correct your work before its sent out to their customers (doctors, hospitals) by the date required. They pay you, not the client.

In time, after you learn the ropes, so to speak you can start your own business from your home. Even when you contract out your services to a larger firm, you do this work from your home. You can work as much or as little as you choose. Some people do go to hospitals and sit in a cubicle from 9-5 and perfrom this work, but the hospital takes out for your medical insurance, unemployment,social security, pension, etc. When you work for yourself, you are responsible for all these things. Doing this from home is lucrative and is one of the new recognized careers. It is all done electronically via your computer. Medical Billing is another way to go and can be incorporated with the Medical Transcription. Many community colleges offer courses in these careers, and its all home study. You also take your Certification tests at home too.

You can keep for the most part, all your income and declare large business tax deductions. Down the road, when you set up your own busiess, and if your fiancee owns 51% of the business on paper, it will be recognized as a Woamn Owned Small Business, and there are perks for that too. Check it out

Question: What do I need to do to support myself with writing?

I am a registered nurse also have a bachelor’s in political science/pre-med. I am interested in making a transition into writing for a living but need to earn at least $40,000 per year and would like to work from home.

I have taken a creative writing course through the state university, taken some useless online writing courses through the community college (Ed2Go is crap). and am now looking into a technical writing certificate.

What constructive advice can you offer a novice – wannabe?

Answer: Choose subjects that you feel comfortable to write about, issues that you may see people has interest in reading, and you easily can afford to write and survey.

Question: Whatever happened to the recession-proof nurse jobs?

I recently graduated from nursing school and successfully passed NCLEX. I started looking around for jobs and have been told over and over again by different agencies, hospitals and nursing homes that they need a minimum of 1-2 yrs of experience. So who will give me the experience? I have also been told that the nurses with 1-2 yrs of experience are having problems finding jobs too! Is the Chicago healthcare industry that saturated and they don’t need nurses here?

Answer: When people started losing their jobs there was a lot of talk about how much of a demand there was for nurses . I think so many people jumped into nursing training that they now have a surplus of nurses . Guess no job is really " recession-proof " .
