Home Business Tax Calculator

Question: For anyone who has time- math / language arts?
Bobo was walking down the street one day minding his own business when a man wearing an advertising sign came up to him and handed him a flyer. It said:
Double discounts
on spring jackets. All are on sale now for 25% off, but with this special coupon, you can receive an additional 10% off.
~for Example:
regular price-$ 47.00
25% off- -$11.75
sale price- $35.25
coupon price- ONLY $30.55
You Save $16.45
No Sales tax
(remeber 10% Off)
Bobo selected a jacket which regular price of $123.00. The sales clerk told him that the amount he owned not including sales tax was $83.00, so he paid for the jacket and went home.
When he got home he took out his trusty calculator and was surprised that the clerk had overcharged him. He thought that he should pay only $79.95 plus tax. please help me with the math and a letter to prove that this is right.
Answer: Bobo is unfortunately mistaken. The reason this is so is because the flyer is wrong. The flyer actually is taking 35% off the discount price which is more than what the flyer actually is. Read the flyer carefully, it says to take 25% off and then an additional 10% off. This does not equal 35%. It ends up equalling around 32.5% off. Does this make sense? So, in the example, you really only save $15.28. So, when you approach Bobo, you either need to take a 32.5% discount or take a 25% discount and an additional 10% off. To do this, I’ve worked it out step by step for you below.
$123.00 x .75 [this is the actual amount he will pay.] = $92.25
$92.25 x .9 = $83.025 or $83.
Another way to do this is:
$123.00 x .25 = $30.75
$123.00 – $30.75 = $92.25
$92.25 x .1 = $9.225
$92.25 – $9.225 = $83.025 or $83
There is one other way to do this and that is to just take the actual total % off:
$123.00 x .325 = $39.975
$123 – $39.975 = $83.025 or $83
Hope this helps!

Automatic Data Entry In Excel
Question: Need Excel Help?
I was given a template to edit/update/modify and improve. Here is the situation:
Cell A1 contains an item that is manually entered by the user.
Cell A5 contains a drop down list (created via Data/Validation/List) that contains a number of options dependent on the entry in Cell A1.
Here are my concerns:
I want the output in Cell A5 to be automatic via a VLookup table (since Cell A5 is directly dependent on Cell A1) so the user will no longer have to choose an option from the present drop-down menu. This will also prevent any inadvertent mistakes from choosing the wrong option.
In going thru the VLookup route, is there a way I can get rid of the drop down menu in Cell A5? I do not want to delete anything because I tried deleting the drop down menu at Cell A5 AND the whole row was deleted.
I hope I have explained my problem well enough. Thanks.
Answer: Click a5 then data and vilidation then see where it’s getting the list now go back and make that cell “any value” instead of list. Now your ready to do vlookup.

Quicken Home Business Online

Question: Quicken, how does one “jump in” and learn how to use it for the first time ?
I am good with numbers and have done simple budgets for my household over the years, I’m in my 50’s, but I have Quicken 2007 Business and home and I’m thinking I don’t want to transport my banking info online. Can I do quicken manually and is the dummie book for it good ? I bought it cheaper without a printed out manual. HElp ? I just want to start small and I’m on a fixed income so it should be easy to start ?
Answer: You do not have to use the online banking to use Quicken. You can enter all the information yourself and then it will only be on your computer’s hard drive, not out on any other website on the Internet.
I would start by creating a checking account. On my Quicken 2006 Deluxe, you can do that by clicking Cash Flow, then Cash Flow Accounts, then Add Account. As I recall, it asks you for a little information and the date and amount you want to start the account with. Then you can start entering transactions. After you get comfortable with that, you can try some other things.
There is help in the program itself that you can use if you need to. Just click on the “Help” link at the top. I haven’t used the “Dummies” book, but I’ve generally heard good things about that whole series.

Question: Can you believe ESPN got rid of Mark Madden in Pittsburgh?
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mark_Madden
Mark Madden is an humorous, if a bit edgy, radio-show host, largely responsible for the Penguins even still being in Pittsburgh… He made some stupid comments (probably not any stupider than I hear every day on other radio shows, even national ones) then apologized for them right away. It seemed the 1250, the local channel wanted to keep him on, but Bristol came down hard.
Any other Pittsburghers here? It would be one thing is Stan was still on that timeslot, becaues at least he wasn’t boring… but have you heard the guy 970 has on now? (snore)
Guess I’ll have to listen to music on the way home from work from now on.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bob_Smizik
Oh my, that’s hilarious. who knows how long that will stay up. I wonder who posted that.
Answer: This issue was addressed about a thousand times when Howard Stern was still on terrestrial radio…if you are offended by Mark Madden, DON’T LISTEN! There’s even a disclaimer that played right before the show came on the air saying that listeners should exercise discretion before tuning in. And really, what’s so offensive about the truth? Sure, Ted Kennedy had some health issues but it’s not like he is Mother Theresa…plus, Madden apologized. It’s unfortunate that people call Mark a “blowhard” when there’s an even bigger blowhard named Bob Smizik, who should spend more time writing about sports and less time using his poor column in the Post Gazette to bash his competition, cutting people off at the knees to make himself feel taller. Overall, it’s a dark day for Pittsburgh sports talk.
